Should Copyright Laws Apply to the Internet?

Should the copyright laws be valid on the Internet? There are some who
maintain that copyright law can not and should not apply to the Internet.
They believe that because the World Wide Web started out as a copyright
free-for-all, that is how it should remain. However, there are many more
people, growing in number, who are rallying to support copyright law on the
Internet. This group of people believes copyright law should be as valid on
the Internet as it is off. There are many arguments which support this
opinion, which I will attempt to outline in this article.

Copyright laws were made to protect the creators of original works. If
someone uses paint, brushes and a canvas to create a piece of art, it's
illegal for anyone else to copy it and claim the artwork as their own. There
are innumerable people who are creating artwork on the Internet today.
Should it be legal to copy their work simply because they are painting with
pixels and a digitizing tablet instead of paint and a brush? Of course not!
Likewise, it is not legal to steal an essay simply because someone wrote it
using a computer and published it on the Internet instead of writing it on a
typewriter and distributing it on a piece of paper. A unique work is a
unique work, no matter in what medium it was created, therefore copyright
laws protect all creators of original works, whether on the Internet or off.

Some needlessly worry that enforcing copyright law on the Internet will
result in censorship and loss of their freedom of speech. Copyright law
doesn't dictate what you may say, it only requires that you say it in your
own unique way and not take others' works without their permission. In
effect, copyrights encourage the creation of new and original creative works.

The Internet is an incredible place of learning and sharing, but stealing
copyrighted material does not qualify as sharing. If we aren't conscientious
web creators and surfers, being careful to obey copyright laws and help
enforce them when need be, the Internet could ultimately dissolve into a
massive, useless computer network inhabited mainly by phonies and frauds who
have masked themselves with the faces of the real, honest netizens.

joined forces for mutual support and encouragement. This "SCOOP GROUP" offers
The SCOOPnet to the citizens of the World Wide Web, to give aid and comfort
and strategies to fight back against the netizens who, through ignorance of
the law and/or through lack of conscience, see fit to point and click, copy
and paste, and call the stolen work their own.
