thank you King of the Jungle ...
now, it's George Wilcken's turn...
I go back to the old days of telecommunications when hacks ran their own
bulletin boards from dark and dingy basements. I can remember getting my
first "additional" phone line to support my Wildcat! BBS. That simple step
lead the way to years of fun and enjoyment.
Being a computer professional (programmer, sys analyst, network manager,
systems manager, and finally director of management information systems) I
just had to have the coolest personal setup there was to showboat to all my
colleagues and friends. I have been closely plugged in to the computer
revolution since the old IBM 5160's and have been clawing to stay on top of
the technology over the years.
The popularity of the internet skyrocketed with the first of the "Big"
providers, Compuserve, and I wasted no time in plugging in to the new
technology. I watched as hordes of users were abandoning their BBS systems
and jumping on the net, so not to be left behind, I followed in earnest.
I started writing HTML back in the old 1.02 ANSI standard for the company I
worked for and developed my first "Online Page". After spending hours
tweaking the code to get the site looking just the way I wanted, I thought
that people like me should be recognized for their work. A year later I
received my first award. I can still remember how great I felt that someone
took the time to not only notice, but to feed back with a trophy.
It was then I decided to design my own award program and perhaps give back
just a little of what I have received over the years. I developed a set of
guidelines for HTML excellence, designed an award image, and put the plan into
action. The first month I received 25 nominations for my award by advertising
on my page. I think I am still in touch with those first 25 people, giving
testament to the wonderful friends you can make on the net.
Over the years, I have never turned down a nominee. I simply evaluate the
page, note any outstanding problems, and work with the nominee to correct them
thus being able to present the award with not only a good conscience, but
helping people perfect their sites and coding skills.
Well, here we are, three years later, and I have looked at more than 10,000
sites, and issued over 8000 awards. But more importantly, I have made many
friends in the process, and learned alot about people. So the awards program
will continue until I can no longer see the monitor, or tap out my humble
praise of the wonderful sites I get to visit. Who knows where this will all
lead us, but far be it from me to bail now! :-)
